Stephen William Hawking was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. Hawking died in his home in Cambridge this morning. He was 76.

Hawking sought to explain some of the most complicated questions of life while himself working under the shadow of a likely premature death.
